Governors

What does the Governing Board do? 

The Governing Board has three main functions:

1. Ensuring clear vision, ethos and strategic direction for the school
2. Providing accountability for school leaders in relation to the educational achievement of pupils and the performance management of staff
3. Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure it’s money is well spent.

Derek Grover (Chair of Governors)

I have been active in school governance since retirement from a career as a civil servant, latterly as a Director of the Department for Education. I have been chair of governors at an infant school, vice-chair of a special school and was until 2019 a National Leader of Governance. I am the vice-chair of Sheffield South East Trust and a member of the Sheffield Diocesan Board of Education. I have been for many years chair of the Sheffield Association for the Voluntary Teaching of English.

Andy Wynne (Vice Chair of Governors)

I have been a school governor for 11 years and am currently chair of Governors at Ballifield Primary School and a member of the Governing Body for Heritage Park and Holgate Meadows Community Schools. I’m the Governance Lead for Learn Sheffield Governance Improvement Service, which supports governors across the city. I was previously a lecturer in further & adult education and subsequently a LA Advisor, specialising in ICT and learning technologies in education and school governance.

Kate Souper: Co-opted Governor

I am alongside Eve Harden and am responsible for Safeguarding, SEND and Governor Training. 

I am an ex-parent of Carfield and my background is in health. I worked as a hospital doctor before moving into health service inspection and teenage pregnancy strategy development.  Much of my work involved asking the right questions and data analysis which are important skills in governance.

I am the board’s local authority governor, and was elected as a parent governor in 2013 and as Co-chair in July 2022. I have no business or pecuniary interests to declare. 

Joe Nobel: Co-opted Governor

I joined the school governing body in September 2017 as a co-opted governor, when my eldest daughter joined the school. I now have two daughters at Carfield in Y2 and Y5. As of September 2022, I am Chair of the Finance, Premises and Health and Safety committee.  

I work as a director of an intellectual property law firm, with responsibility for HR, finance and operational planning. I have previously managed care services for children and vulnerable adults. I also volunteer as the treasurer and trustee for the Carfield Friends PTA and enjoy mountain biking in my spare time. I have no business or pecuniary interests to declare. 

Ash Khan: Co-opted Governor

I am Deputy Headteacher at Sheffield’s Inclusion Unit and am a governor at Nether Edge Primary School, where I was Chair of Governors for 4 years. I joined the board in September 2022 and am Governor for Behaviour and Pupil Premium. I have no business or pecuniary interests to declare. 

Marieanne Elliot: Co-opted Governor

I am a Carfield parent, local Green Councillor and Legal Advisor.

I have experience of representing individuals and organisations, and a good grasp of management and governance structures, skills I can bring to my role as school governor. I am used to dealing with challenging situations and conflict resolution through my professional work.

As a councillor, I sit on several council committees including the Finance Sub-Committee. As an elected member I am responsible for scrutinising and asking challenging questions to ensure the best possible outcomes for our communities. As a member of Carfield’s governing body I can also help with the interpretation of, and adherence to, relevant statutory requirements and other responsibilities.

I have a close connection with Carfield as my eldest child attended from nursery to year 6, and my youngest is currently in year 5. I have no business or pecuniary interests to declar

Paul Turpin: Co-opted Governor

I am a small business owner and a parent at Carfield Primary. I have been a local Green councilor for the past 3 ½ years, and was the Executive Member for Inclusive Economy, Jobs and Skills in the final year before the council changed the system of governance where I dealt with local businesses and adult education. Within the council I sit on various committees including Economic Development and Skills.

I am very experienced in management, scrutinising and challenging decisions and in directing projects; skills very useful in my role as a school governor. I am also a trustee at The Source Academy in Sheffield, which is primarily concerned with apprenticeships. I have no business or pecuniary interests to declare.

Rebekah Pillar: Staff Governor

I am a class teacher of seven years, and the Assistant SENCo at Carfield. My role on the governing body is to bring a staff viewpoint and perspective to board discussions and debate.

I am committed to the values and ethos that Carfield thrives upon, and I am passionate about providing the best that we can for all children in the school.

I was elected as the staff governor In October 2022. I have no business or pecuniary interests to declare.
