Phonics is taught on a daily basis throughout Year 1 and Year 2 using the Read, Write, Inc programme (which is also used in Foundation Stage).
Spelling We learn to read and write High Frequency Words from the 1st 100 words and the next 200 words lists using a Superstar Spelling Spiral programme devised by Key Stage One staff. The children work their way along a spiral and when they reach the middle they earn a badge to keep. There are 10 badges in all over the two years.
Handwriting Handwriting is taught through Read, Write Inc. and complimented by 10 minutes practise per day.
Year 1 children practise on whiteboards to allow for ease of movement and then progress to paper and pencils. Year 2 children progress further on to using lined paper.
Reading Children follow the Book Band scheme with a variety of books from Storyworld, Floppy’s Phonics, Oxford Reading Tree, Project X plus longer books for children who need to develop reading stamina.
Children have a reading record in school to be completed by staff, and a home school comment book which is used by both school staff and parents. There are ideas for games and activities in the books together with the letters and sounds and high frequency words.
Children read individually and in Guided Reading groups once per week.
Writing Key Stage One uses Pie Corbett’s Storytelling into Writing programme. Actions are used alongside rehearsed language to enhance children’s language ready for writing.
Children write stories, instructions, reports, poetry, labels and lists.
