These lessons cover the themes around Citizenship and other ‘Growing Up Skills’, aiming to give children the ability to grow effectively together within our diverse and multi-ethnic city. It draws heavily upon a programme and teaching strategy called Philosophy for children. This is where a theme planned by the teacher or expressed by a child, is debated and explored. The children are expected to listen to one another, consider points of view and start to develop their own opinions on a subject.
All this work is underpinned by a full programme of Values Education and the word of the month can be part of the lessons. Similarly, the focus is on news of the week or an event that is being held nationally. The aim of these lessons is to encourage empathy, give children the opportunity to ask and answer questions and to develop their opinions.
