Reception

In Reception, we build on the children’s nursery experiences, transitioning them fully into school routines and setting high expectations. Reception is made up of three classes: Butterflies, Ladybirds and Bumblebees. Each classroom has recently been refurbished. They are set up in neutral tones to create a calm and comfortable environment. The classrooms are stocked with natural and authentic resources so that learning can be replicated at home. We also have our own learning garden, where we aim to mirror the learning activities from the classroom and bring them outdoors, all year round, to support all areas of development.

Learning is based on books taken from the 100 recommended reads. The children will read books from a wide range of authors and be exposed to and encouraged to use rich vocabulary. Most learning will be introduced through a mixture of carefully planned play and adult-led focused activities to develop their creativity and imagination. However, there will be more formal teaching of Literacy, Maths and Phonics. Children access Phonics teaching in small groups that are carefully matched to their ability using the whole school phonics scheme; Read Write Inc.

The things your child will learn in Reception have been organised into three prime areas of learning:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal and Social Development

And four specific areas of learning:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Throughout the Reception year, the children are supported by enthusiastic and passionate educators who ensure that they receive the best opportunities and experiences to start their school journey. Staff help to build the foundations for learning by using purposeful language and exploring concepts the children will revisit in greater depth in Key Stage 1 and 2. By the end of Reception, we aim to nurture children to become confident, curious and independent learners.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask, our staff are happy to help.
