Social, Emotional and Mental Health Provision
“Evolve”- Nurture provision
Our Philosophy
Carfield recognises the wide range needs of our pupils and aims to provide the right environment for all. In order to meet a range of needs, we have an embedded social, emotional and mental health provision known as “Evolve”. The Evolve provision aims to provide an environment built on child-centred learning which promotes positive self-esteem and shapes good relationships. Additionally, we focus on the holistic development of our pupils, while maintaining the high standards and expectations of behaviour that is seen throughout the school.
For children attending Evolve, we aim to make them feel comfortable, content, safe and feel a sense of belonging within a group. Because of this, the curriculum delivered in Evolve is tailored and personalised to the needs of the children based on the six principles of nurture which are as follows:
- Children’s learning is understood developmentally.
- The classroom offers a safe base.
- The importance of nurture for the development of self-esteem.
- Language is a vital means of communication.
- All behaviour is communication.
- The importance of transition in children’s lives
In addition to this, we use the Boxall Profiles and SDQ assessments to ensure that children’s needs are met, the interventions are targeted and tailored to each child and that progress is monitored closely.
The Evolve provision is an intervention based hub and offers hands-on and sensory based play. The Evolve Leaders work closely with the external agencies such as Educational Psychologists and SEND consultants and importantly, the children attending the provision, to understand their development and their needs so that key areas can be focused on and targets can be worked towards. Our Evolve Leaders model appropriate communication and relationships with one another and with the other children. There is a strong emphasis on the importance of making mistakes but also rectifying the mistakes without meltdowns and with problem solving. By doing this, children are shown how to succeed even when things do not always go to plan.
Problem solving is a key area of nurture and we focus on resilience. Children in Evolve are encouraged to work together, be resilient and not give up at the first sign of something not working immediately. We use opportunistic learning and using a stimuli that interests the children and promote learning experiences around it.
In Evolve, we concentrate on social and emotional well-being and encourage effective communication and positive behaviours which improve attainment in the classroom. Our activities are designed to encourage communication, social interactions and building relationships within the setting. Children who are invited here are likely to attend for 2-4 terms for specific interventions and each case is looked at on an individual basis, and a personal plan is made in the best interest of the child.
