Year 5

The Year 5 classes have had a very busy half term. They have really enjoyed their first topic ‘Cityscape’ and learning all about their city. They have studied Sheffield’s history, investigated how the landscape has changed over the years and studied two contrasting localities (Meersbrook and Bradfield).

Early in the half term, each class went on a graffiti walk around the local area and identified both positive and negative examples of graffiti within Meersbrook. Back at school, as part of their English lessons, the children produced some excellent persuasive letters to send to our local councillor expressing their opinions about the negative impact that graffiti has on Meersbrook.

In maths, Year 5 have already covered a wide range of concepts and skills, including place value, addition, subtraction and short and long multiplication. The children are now starting to apply their learning to a variety of reasoning questions.

The highlight of the last few weeks was the Kingswood Residential. The children had a fantastic time on the visit. They tried out many activities that they had not experienced before such as bouldering, archery, high wire challenges and zip lining. As a result of the visit, the children improved their team work and perseverance skills. By experiencing a residential visit early in the year, we feel that the children have really bonded as a year group and have grown in confidence.

We have been so impressed by the continued positive attitude of the children towards their work and this is evident in the quality of their work.
